Disable Guest Posting

This seems like it should be a simple, default feature, but for some reason guests can post new threads on my forums. I looked through their permissions in the admin cp and the ability to post threads is not checked for Guests. The only thing that works is taking them off the list of groups that can access the board, but that means they can't view it at all. I did convert from an Invision Power Board 2.3.6 database, so did that somehow screw up permissions?

If anyone can help me with disabling guest posting, thanks.

Just edit your boards so that guests can not view those boards. There is also a mod for making guests register...

Hi, welcome to Simple Machines Forum!

You can disable guest posting in the Permissions settings in that specific Membergroup.

Here is a documentation that might help you understand the Permissions Settings better:  Permissions

Permissions -> Edit the specific Membergroup you don't want people posting.

Hi

I do not recommend you disabling your guest section.  Leave it so the spammers and smut senders can have a place to dumb their garbage.

If you close out the guest section, what happens is these spammers and smut senders then will try to register to get into your site.  You do not know who is the spammer or smut sender or the ones being legit.   Once they get in, they can do a lot of damage to you and your site.

You can have guests read all you want to allow on your site.  This is no problem.    Just leave one spot for guests to make posts on.  This for you is your recycle bin!!!!!!!

Change your registration from automatic to manual approval and do check the IP of each person registering.  If any come from Ukraine or Latvia, deny it immediately.

This way you protect your main site and these spammers and smut senders simply end up in the garbage can recycle bin which is named GUESTS.!!!!!, and then you can ban the IP from the SMF and from your panel, and make sure you keep a record of all those banned.  Eventually you will get to know who the smut senders are, their times etc.

Here is a tip.  Most spammers and smut senders have very odd user names and tend to be quite big itself.   Limit user names quietly yourself to only 6-9 letters and it should pretty much help you out to weed out these from the real folks.

Why? If you disable guest posting, they would have to register - meaning they can be funnelled though other, better, anti spam measures.

Also some of your other tips aren't particularly applicable; many of the spammers on this site in recent days would actually have gotten past most of your rules.

Can i hide Newtopic button for guest when they browsing board topic lists?

But, i dont like to disable guests from viewing boards and topic listings. I just want to disable them from posting a NEWTOPIC only.

Plz inform me if there is any mod or process required for that.
