Sorry I don't really understand your last reply.

Your PHP mail function may be limited by your host, or misconfigured even - if it doesn't work at all, you might want to ask your host about using it.

SMTP then again, has nothing to do with PHP mail, and requires an e-mail account somewhere else to be used.
