The local roller derby team has been running two forum boards, one for the entire team under phpbb3 and one for the management team under smf. They now have decided (wisely, I think) that they want to combine both forums in one installation of software and controlling access to various sections using user and group permissions. They want to use smf. So the question is, it possible to pull the contents of the existing phpbb3 database into the smf database without overwriting the contents of the smf database?

No, it's not possible as such. The converter will wipe most of the necessary SMF tables data.
Thing is, the problem at hand is more along the lines of converting to SMF, then merging the two sets of SMF data.
And merging is not a very easy problem to solve. Depending on what exactly you wish to be preserved (i.e., merged), if it's more or less, it might be that you can get some help in the Help Wanted (not for support) board, but possibly not for free.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.
