Cannot Install Packages

I get the error messages:

An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

I have chmod all to 0777 since source and the packages folder was not-writable.

What can I do so I can install my mods?

I am very new on this!

I have SMF 2RC2.0

You also need to ensure that your themes directory is also writable.

I can install themes... but no packages.

Try making a folder called temp in Packages/

The 0777 file attribute is forbidden on some server environments.
You may want to try 0755 and/or 0775 on ./Packages and ./Packages/temp

I have another problem now. The simple portal never showed up and I tried to uninstall it and got the same message:

You should follow the same steps for uninstallation, create the "temp" directory and chmod accordingly .

I had no trouble installing even if the simple portal did not show afterwards?

i think i know what is the problem, your host has the safe_mode on ?

Which test failed? Just some of them or all of them? Can you please upload and link to a phpinfo file?

What is a phpinfo() file?

First it was just some of them...but then I got this error ..

Most likely your problems are going to be caused by the last two compile commands which disabled the xml reader etc.

What should I do?
Should I ask my host to do something?
Or is there something I can do?

This seem to appear for all mods I installed. Does that mean they don't work properly? I know simpleportal never showed up! And now an error appear to all mods.

Well your php.ini does not have safe_mode enabled and unless I overlooked it mod_security doesn't seem to a problem. Can you download one of the files that was supposed to be edited by the Simple Portal mod and attach it here so that I can verify the edits were made?

Download a copy of the top level index.php file and attach it here in your next post so that I can see if the edits were made when the mod was installed. You will need to use either filezilla or the file manager in the cpanel of your hosting.
