The only mod change I see in this file is from the Mascot mod, which if I had to guess is the first mod you installed that changed the index.php file. Most likely all mods since then have failed the test on index.php due to your account no longer having ownership of the file. This is a server configuration problem most likely and you will need to speak with your host and have them fix the problem of you losing ownership when a file is modified or created by the script. The Apache user now has ownership of this file most likely. You can ask your host to run a chown back to your account but the problem as it stands will start over the next time you run a mod install.
PM at your own risk, some I answer, if they are interesting, some I ignore.

So, what must my host do to fix the problem? And will I be able to upload mods afterwards?  Must he activate something in order to make it work this time around?
How can we make it work?

What Mascot mod? I am pretty sure I did not uploaded any mod with that name?

NVM, wrong file, but the fact remains that there has been no changes to this file. Can you please PM me a temp admin account to your forum so that I can look into this further. FTP access would also help a lot.

Ok, some more info about the problem. I have another SMF forum that also just got installed. So this is what happened when i first tried to upload a mod/package.

Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 2.0 RC2 (more detailed)
Current SMF version: SMF 2.0 RC2
GD version: bundled (2.0.28 compatible)
MySQL version: 5.0.77
PHP: 5.1.6
Server version: Apache/2.2.8 (Unix)

I clicked on simpleportal on the server and it downloaded the packages. I click on install and everything is tested successfully, however at the bottom on the page it request FTP access. I got message:

FTP Information Required
Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager. Note you can also do this manually using an FTP client - to view a list of the affected files please click here.

So, earlier I checked the permissions and themes, smilies files was not re-writable (their folders are). The main directory of the forum was not re-writable and the packages folder and its content was not re-writable. So I made them re-writable 0777 with cmod.  I also added a temp folder to packages.

So back to the install, I added the FTP info and then I got the message as before:

An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

This happened last time on the other board also.

What is the problem here? What should I do..

I would really this for work on both sites.

I chmod everyting to 0777 in packages and clicked on ftp and it installed. But the install does not appear to be active or working.

I tried to uninstall and I get the same error as before:

Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

I am marking this one as solved for the moment. It was a permission problem. There is a possibility that there may also be a ownership problem but that is still to be determined.
