Hello,

I have a PHPBB site which makes extensive use of the attachments mod.  It is a photo retouching site, and many of the posts have images attached to them.  I read that SMF can convert from PHPBB, which is great.

My question is whether SMF attachments have image previews (thumbnails) on the messages.  I installed SMF for another forum I have and it seems that it does not have thumbnails, although it does support attachments.  Since the PHPBB site has huge graphic attachments, I have to have some thumbnailing capability.  Does SMF provide this?

Also I have a second problem with the PHPBB software.  When attachments are removed from people's messages, it does not remove the attachment file from the underlying filesystem.  Because of this, I have dozens of image files on disk that are not actually attached to any messages in the forum.  I am guessing that the SMF conversion process will take care of this?

Thanks,
-Matt

Hi, glad to hear you are considering migrating to SMF.

The converter does indeed port over the phpBB attachments mod, and should also only move over the current attachments - so that shouldn't present an issue.

On the thumbnails front I have good and bad news. The bad news is that the current version of SMF (1.0.3) does not include thumbnail support for attachments. The better news is that the upcoming version (1.1) will include support for thumbnails. If you search for 1.1 you'll find that we're currently still in beta testing stage, but I'd hope to see a public release within a couple of months (hope).

So, if thumbnails are *that* important I'd suggest either holding off few a couple of months, or otherwise if you want to you could sign up as a Charter Member ($50 a year for priority support and beta access), but it all depends on your priorities.

As for the filesystem being cluttered with attachments, not a problem.  SMF won't do that, by the way.
