but the user is still registered and seems fine.. he even receives a welcome email (but no welcome PM which i just recently setup)

i figured it out.. this is due to this mod http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=387 it is not compatible with the latest version of SMF

arent there anything compatible the latest version (1.1.11)

Some mods that dont say they are compatible with SMF 1.1.11 are some times. That mod just doesn't happen to be one. I don't think there is a replacement for that mod either.
