when my users post a message, the thread closes.  Is there a way to keep it open and have their message appear as the last posting?

TIA

do you mean returns to topic listing or locked ?

Arantor

I'd speculate that it's just returning to message index on posting.

I'd love to tell you how to change that so users get returned to their thread but it's different between SMF 1 and SMF 2.

Can you tell me how to do with SMF 2 ?

Thank you.

For SMF 2.0
Admin > Configuration > Themes and Layout > Member Options.

For your theme:
Change current options for all members using this theme
Return to topics after posting by default. (change from Don't Change to Change, and tick the box, then Save)

That will reset it for all current users.

Then:
Configure guest and new user options for this theme
Return to topics after posting by default. (tick, then save)

it does not lock, it returns to topics listing

TomR: If you're using 2.0, see above. If you're using 1.1, see above but it's the Reset Options area instead of Member Options, and it looks slightly different.

Thanks - I'm using 1.1 and found it right where you said.

I think yesterday you were 56% done on simple desk, now 55%?   ;)

Yes, that's based on the number of things on the bug tracker. I added a couple of things to the tracker over the last couple of days.
