smtp email not working

hi up till today my email was set as default php and my host decided to start blocking that due to they say i need to use smtp however we cannot get it working i setup an email acct and put the settings in but nothing comes thru they told me php was blocked because the mail comes from nobody here is their response

What you are saying is true. But, the email is send by user nobody ( which is apache, the webserver ). This way of sending is an anonymous way to send emails. So spammers use it for sending spam and we cannot trace them to their account. This is why we have blocked it.

As you are a legitimate user, you need to use SMTP authentication method to send out emails. I hope you understand this, as it is for your own good too. Or do you want this server to be blocked by RBL due to spamming?


but i cannot get the email workin so far either can they using smtp can anyone help me here

Have you asked your host if all your settings are correct that you have set in SMF? Also if they can check the SMTP port?

actually my host went in and set the settings themselves and still no go smtp port is 25 i assume they have that open

It could vary by host on which port they have open, so we can't say for sure.

You can try using a different email address(AOL, Gmail, Yahoo) Then look up what they use for SMTP ports, then try and use that, if it still doesn't work, you have to let your host know that it is def. something wrong on their side.

i tried gmail and no good  they use port 587 i asked my host if that is blocked i am awaiting a response

Then I would suggest bugging your host about it stating that you can not get your forum email to work properly and that you tried a gmail account and couldn't get that to work properly either then. It seems to me that this would be a problem with their ports.

I can't really see this being a SMF issue to be honest. The SMTP settings work just fine on my test install.

Looking through your mods, I don't see anything that would cause trouble with this.

Oh, just saw this, you are trying to use SSL. PHP would have to be configured to use SSL.

i looked at that last post you gave however i am still confusd what do i do to enable the ssl as it seems thats what i have to do

i have access to the server through ftp cn i change a file to make it work

my host has assured me ssl is enabled and they said they have tons of clients using smtp with no problems this leads me to believe it is something on my end like a mod or something blocking it

If you want, you can create a test installation of SMF see if the email works then try adding each mod one by one to see if the problem persists. (I know thats a lot for someone many mods.)
