I would like to add language support to my Forum for another language, but yet keep the default language as English. I have downloaded the language pack for another language, but is it possible to install it without changing the default language and just adding it as an additional language capability?

Many thanks...

Marc

Hi marc.

yes of course. You download your language pack, you unzip it, you upload it by ftp, and it's ok for what you want. ;)

Thanks. I put Thai language on my photography forum, but it doesn't seem to be working: www.photographythailand.com/forum

I have English as the default language on the forum, but I would like it to be able to display Thai as well if someone writes something in Thai.

GravuTrad

he has to choose it in his profile.

Thanks. I will try that. If someone chooses Thai as their language and then writes something in Thai, will the posting show as Thai for everyone else if their default language is English? I want the forum to be able to work in bi-lingual. Thanks.

The text typed in the posts aren't related to language. You can type what you want. The only thing that could be related is if you would use the dictionary function.

But someone once typed in Thai in my Forum and it showed up as mixed up text. Was not Thai. Just strange symbols. So that is why I put in Thai language, but it hasn't helped. Thanks.

can you put a screenshot?

what's the charset of your database?

The problem may be due to not using UTF8.

The standard format is best for a single language, and UTF8 is a little more complex (maybe a little slower).
But when you have two different kinds of characters (for example English and Thai), UTF8 is the best way to go.

It is also called "Unicode".

Try changing your forum to Unicode. But this may mean changing a lot, so try to do some research first.

But this is just a guess without more information.

My forum and database are both set to UTF8-generic, default language is English.
However, other languages are not reflecting properly. Creating Categories and Boards with names in other languages shows question marks - "?????? ??? ??????"

Please, help!

Thank you!

What languages files have you? normal or utf8?

the ones that came with the installation of SMF 1.1.11
Where should I check?

GravuTrad

You should so download english utf8 files and upload them. then set your defaut language in the settings as english utf8.

English shows fine and as I've just checked so does Swidish.
Russian does not, Japanise does not...
Looks like I don't have all the files I need.
Where should I check which ones I have?
And where to get the UTF files for othe languages?

Thanks!
