Display unread post count per forum on board index.

Hello, SMF.  I am working on a custom theme for my World of Warcraft guild's new website.  One thing I want to do is remove the "last post by ... in ... on" section from the default theme and replace it with the number of unread posts in that particular forum and child forums.  Is this something relatively easy to do?  Could anyone let me know what the string is for this information if it's already built into the forums software?

PS I apologize if this has already been asked and answered somewhere.  I tried searching but couldn't find a solution.

Actually I'm struggling with the same issue.... did you find finally how to do it?
