soooo does this mean SMF is not going to become obsolete? I have already started moving my forum database to vBulletin...  Someone needs to tell the community what the hell is going on!!!!

SMF was not obsolete, is not obsolete, and will not be obsolete as long as there is a team working on it. :)

Well, it depends on your definition of obsolete. Sould would say SMF is obsolete since it isn't pursuing the MySpace/FaceBook push to be "social" (ignoring that making posts is a social activity, just a different kind than the "updates" they are thinking of).

I'd rather say that SMF the software will make progress as long as there are developers working on it.

There were and still are problems, and they are nothing to take lightly, but that doesn't mean SMF is necessarily "dead" or "dying".

Currently, as you can see, RC3 is out, and the developers are working to make sure that the remaining bugs are found and squashed, so that 2.0 final version can be out the door.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

SMF in its current incarnation will probably die after the release of 2.0 final (because its current dev team will not stay forever), but it doesn't mean it'll be immediately obsolete...
Heck, it's still the best free forum software around. Just not by a large margin, unlike a couple of years ago.
I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered.

why can't they just get along?

also what's the problem with the dev team exactly?

Matthew K.

He never said anything was wrong with the dev team at all, but they do have real life things going on too, and might need to move on eventually. That's the way I understand Nao's post...

Weldone dev team but i think its time to start going gold.

updating to releases is not a problem but people use many mods.
Mod developers doesnt really update instantly and some forums cant do without those mods.

yeah plus i see no reason why they can just release a small update for rc2 users :\

Matthew K.

Actually, most big mods that have active mod authors are updated very quickly.

I plan to have all of my mods updated by Thursday.
Most major mods are updated very shortly after release of a new version.

They're not going to go gold until the bugs get fixed. Declaring it gold when it's not ready would be worse than holding back.

Is it true that session checks were removed from quick reply & quick edit? Wouldn't that be a security risk, maybe allowing hackers to edit other people's posts? I thought that was the original reason for these annoying session checks really...

No, that is not the case. In fact, no session checks have been removed for POST requests as, indeed, that would form a security risk. ;)

The session check has been removed for a few GET requests though, for example on the requests for the quick quote buttons and the 'add poll' button. The reason behind this is that those requests don't manipulate data -- therefore they do not need the check The forms they link to will require a check on submit, though! :)

I don't see what's to rush here. SMF 1.1 is very usable and functional.  Why not give time for SMF 2.0 to develop properly. Specifically when there's no rush for it. For community, mod developer and designers' feedback it is important to have betas and release candidates. That to find bugs, get suggestions for better features, etc.
