is there a way to do announcements like forumotion has?? like it scrolls and you can tell people about your site and such??

You could use a scrolling text code in the Header and Footer Mod. Or you can install Simple Portal and put the code in a Block anywhere.
Here is just one of the possible sites to get the code. I tried it and it works.

You should also be able to post scrolling text in the news fader.
