He's not asking for support as such, but how to build his community.

Asking the same damn question on multiple forums doesn't make you look good, btw.

Ashley S

Arantor. I made a thread in a different board and thieve moved to this board.

Arantor

No, I meant asking the exact same question here and on simpledesk.net isn't going to get you better answers.

Ashley S

People can no better answers than most people.

Arantor

Most people on simpledesk.net are people already here too, so asking the same question in two places where the same people will see it doesn't seem like marketing.

I wouldn't really advertise just yet until you have more content there - which means stuff you have to start yourself. Also a different theme; there are so many forums just using the default themes. Be original, be creative, make your forum stand out instead of being one of a thousand other forums that feel identical both in content and theme.

He doesn't have any tech experiances so no point asking OP for help.

He sure can't prove he has. Anyone can say, "I've used forums for 2 years."

What do you know about the forum scripts? What do you have to prove it?

Arantor

You asking me that, Royalduke?

rd

Of course not! OP

I know your talents Arantor :P if OP was you, I'd listen and would trust.

Ashley S

Arantor. I can't find any decent themes. I no your is custom and its nice and i can't find any decent ones.

Arantor

Then pay someone to make you one.

Ashley S

I can't be paying people :'(. I will just have to look for a decent one somewhere. I need to save my cash for my websites.

Edit a current one?

If you have used forums for so long then you must know how to.

Ashley S

Editing themes? You can't on some because the owner of theme don't like it.

Yes you can as long as you don't change copyright... you should have known this. Forget it, no pointing teaching the teacher, lol.

I've never seen an author say "no" to this.

Arantor

There is no theme I'm aware of that prevents you modifying it. In any case, a theme that cannot be modified even by a mod isn't going to be practical for business.

No need to get so hostile Arator. Be happy. Life is too beautiful to argue like that.

Apparently Mr. Forum-Support doesn't understand that...

Ha! OK Mr. Bandwidth-is-Free...

Not y fault you don't know where to get free bandwidth from, I have access to over 1 TB! Not an overseller but a VPS.

I lol'd at reading this post... You can't even tell a hijack when you see one.

Arantor

How much are you paying a month for 1TB of bandwidth a month for VPS, and who's your host?

I PMed it to you.

I am gonna create my own advertising topic :)

Arantor

As I said to you in PM, they're not a VPS seller, they're a dedicated server seller.

Wonder what their support's like, for the price I can tell you it probably won't be that great if you ever need anything from them.

Actually they do everything for us. I got a hosting account through Webmin, thus a part of the server. I have a small amount of disk space but a lot of bandwidth. The support is very good according to the person who runs the server. Currently there is only 2 active sites on dedi.

You really are a walking contradiction. You say you have free bandwidth, but yet you are paying a hosting company for 1TB/month.

Free as in paid by donations. I admit though, I don't run or admin the main site that's on the server.

So as I explained to you... someone is still paying the bill.

Man. I missed this drama. =/

So anyway. 1 TB per month is about 386 KB/second sustained transfer. This essentially means you have a very, very slow connection. :)
This would cost me about 30 cents per month to provide.

Ensiferous: You know as well as I know that most hosts don't just provide 1TB a month of bandwidth for customers. I don't know many plans that just offer 1 TB without being relatively expensive.

It's a 2 TB bandwidth dedicated server that I have a VPS slice of. I don't need it now(still keeping it ;)) because I got a server for my hosting service. It wasn't that expensive because it didn't have Cpanel. The server is very fast in my experiance.

No. Obviously not. Hosts have to make money. I'm just saying that while bandwidth costs money, it's not the huge expense it was made out to be here. Since 1 TB transfer over one month equals 386 KB/s of sustained transfer. This requires a 1 mbit connection not accounting for bursts. And that can be bought at just shy of 70 cents. Less if you're willing to compromise on the quality of the bandwidth.

Of course this is for hosts themselves, and only when they have over a certain amount of commitment (usually a gbit minimum). An end-user couldn't possibly get it at that price, but in theory it's possible to get bandwidth for not very much at all.
My Latest Blog Post: Debugging Nginx Errors

Arantor

Ensiferous: Sure. The cost I was getting at is from the end user POV as a VPS purchaser.
