phpBB3 to SMF1.1 without installing phpBB

I am shifting to a new host and intend to use SMF for the new board. The same board used to run on phpBB in the previous server. I have backed up all the required database files but am worried about the conversion process if phpBB is not installed.

In the old server, phpBB used to run on the main domain like http:// mydomain.com [nofollow] /

I would like SMF to run on the same domain name, in the new server.

If I have to install phpBB first, I believe SMF has to run on a sub folder like http:// mydomain.com/smf [nofollow]

Is there a way to convert from phpBB to SMF without having to install phpBB3?

Yes. Just delete all the phpBB files except attachments, uploaded avatars and the config file, then install SMF in the same directory. As long as the config file is there, you should be able to convert without any issues.
