What mods should I download initially?

Can you please recommend to me some mods that i should download at the very beginning.

For instance I would like to have the mod that lets me embed a youtube video in a post.

The mods that suit your forum depend, well, on what your forum is about.

The one that embed YouTube in a post is called Aeva Media and includes a gallery too.

i would definitely install aeva  to embed youtube the others i would use are member colour link and advanced reputation system as you haven't mentioned what version either 1.1.11 or 2.0RC3 its hard to suggest as not all mods work with all versions.

My server only has php 4.x so I think I am restricted to version 1.1.x

looking at the requirements here

it says php4 will work but doesn't say that only applies to 1.1.x

SMF 2.0 works on PHP 4.4, as does most of Aeva I believe.

That said, PHP 4.4 was last updated in 2007 and even the PHP team that wrote it don't support it any more, and I'd be inclined to get them to upgrade or find a new host.
