If you are using 2.0 RC3, download this mod. It addresses a few problems with image attachment handling. As well it will give you the option to set a maximum size for attached images so you can take the thumbnail size down to something reasonable.

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer. If that fails, read the manual.
