How Can I Add Extra Smilies to the 'Start New Topic' Box?

Hey Guys,

Im looking to add a couple more smilies to the post and reply page on my 2.0 RC3 installation. I have searched for the last hour on this forum for an answer but don't seem to be able to find something which is suitable.

No matter what smiley package I add to my forum, and regardless of how many smilies are in that package, only 16 smilies appear - the basic ones, smile, grin, embarrassed, sad, shocked, shy etc etc. I installed the 'Lots of Smilies' package with like 297 smilies, and again, only the 16 main ones from the package appeared.

So what I need to know, is how to ADD the extra smilies that are clearly uploaded to the default smiley directory, to the post box, so they can be readily used by people. I've seen topics on the forum where people say there is a facility via admin to add individual smileys to a package - that doesn't appear in my Smileys and Message Icons part of the admin.

Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Andrew MacDonald

This is how I do it:

I upload the smilies into the "default" directory, using FTP.

Then, I go to Admin>Smileys and Message Icons>Add Smiley.

Using "Use Existing File", I click the selector beside "Filename:" and select the file I uploaded.

Make sure that "Default" is selected, beside "using smiley set:".

I add the "Code:" and "Tooltip or description:" stuff and make sure that "Post Form" is selected beside "Location:". (Unless you want it in the popup, or hidden, obviously).

"Save changes".

Done!

Thanks for the reply Kat, I tried following those instructions from another thread on the forum, but I don't have an 'Add Smiley' section in my admin. Here's 2 screenshots of my Smiley section of the admin...

Looks like you have a weird theme.

Try it using the SMF default.

Not in "Smiley sets". Just the first "Smileys" page.

Yup, that's what Im doing. When I click on the 'Smileys and Post Icons' link in the left hand navigation bar, the first page that comes up is the Smiley Sets page, by default.

Try going to Admin, then clicking on "Smileys and message icons", on the main page, rather than in the left column.

Same thing happened again. What about If I give you an administrator login account, would it be possible that you could login and take a quick look. . .  when you have the time, of course?

Yeah, sure.

I'll need a URL, too, of course. ;)

Thank you, Kat. I have emailed the site along with admin login details via PM to you.

Looking odd, though, at the moment.

Why do not you upload a folder with the smilies you need into your {ThemeURL}. I think that will manually work, Not sure though...

******.

Something important's wrong.

The tab for the "Add smiley" thing IS showing.

It's just not showing correctly. (You can see, if you use the theme called "Core Theme").

Did this happen to go all wrong, just after you added the WrapTextImage mod, by any chance?

Erm, I gotta be honest with you Kat, I have never looked at the smiley section of the forum before, other than to originally add the smileys in the first place, and all I did then was overwrote the default smileys with my own smileys.

So I have never actually seen the 'Add Smiley' tab that you mention, so do not know when it suddenly disappeared.  :-\

Bugger.

Well, the best I can do, is tell you what I'd do, if that was my forum.

Inside "Packages" directory, you'll find another, named "backups".

Find the last mod you installed (Those files are date-stamped), in there, and download it. Dearchive it, then upload everything to your site, overwriting what's there, now.

If the problem persists, try the one before that, and so on.

OR, you could get the SMF install archive/package, dearchive it and upload everything, from there, EXCEPT SETTINGS.PHP AND INSTALL.PHP.

That will give you a virgin forum. The mods will still all be there, but they'll need to be reapplied.

Either way, the choice is yours.

Ahh yes, I totally understand, and am competent enough to do that!! I'll give it a try when I get into the office in the morning and will report back to see how we're doing.

I would suspect that during my time of making changes to the core files for manual installs on this mod, that mod, etc, i have clearly done something wrong along the line, so ill give it a try, make a good backup first, and will get back to you.

Thanks again for taking time out of your day to help me, it is very much appreciated. :) x
