One of my staff asked me this "Is there a way to get 'editors notes' in a topic that will only show to moderators and admins and the like and not the normal users."

This could be done in the forum of a markup tag like:
[moderator][/moderator] (visible only to moderators and above)
[admin][/admin] (Visible to administrators)
[staff][/staff] (Visible to everyone in the staff group)

The other option is adding a notes field that shows up to moderators and admin when viewing or editing the post.

The hidden content would not be visible to the poster even if editing the message unless they had the proper access required. The text should not be shown in the page at all including via view source unless you are in the proper member group.

Main uses for this would be for staff notes for that post. For example noting why an edit was made to a post. Yes you could post the notes on a forum but that can be missed. One example I can think of is me specifying that a commercial poster has my permission to post in a board that generally does not allow commercial messages.

I was going to post something similarso instead of starting a new topic I will just bump this one up.

I would personally also like to see this mod done because it would allow me to provide premium content to paying members. For example if a meber is a site sponsor, he would also have access to additional content within a post such as a sourcecode or image, or movieclip, maybe a coupon code etc.

Sounds like a good idea!

I've gotta say that I rather like this idea too.  I'd be a good way to have reminders of boundries in particularly heated threads for the staff.
