Just attach the one from default here, don't place your display.template.php from default in your theme. It will just make things complicated in future.

You mean a progress bar related to the post count? or an image of the ranks itself?

Admin --> Membergroups

When you create a membergroup or modify them, you'll see a field called Star image filename:

Place the image within the images folder and then change the filename accordingly. That should let you add an image of the rank itself.
