Legolass

Hi there,

i seem to be having issues with mods. i am using 2.0 RC3

they upload and install fine, but then nothing happens after that, no change, i tried with the 'simple audio video embedder' and the 'wow - world of warcraft tooltips' mods but neither is doing anything

my knowledge for these forums is pretty basic, so it may be something obvious i'm missing :/

can you help?

site is www.ixi-guild.co.uk

thanks in advance

IceXaos

After the installation of the MOD, do the instructions tell you they need to be enabled from a certain panel, or do they have a panel themselves which you should set up?

Any Errors in the log ?

is there a way to view the instructions after the installation?

edit: wow there's actually about 600 pages of those errors
in the last 2 days since i installed the mods :O

IceXaos

You may wanna check file permissions, or if nothin' else, install to a temp folder.  I gotta go to bed, so if nobody helps ya, I will try to remember when I wake up.

the wow tooltip instructions say this 'Your site must have libcurl or fopen in order for this mod to work' how do i know if i have these?

IP's are not private.  Just simply having the link to your site allows someone to ping it, and they have the server address.  Your IP is visible any time you open a page by simply recording the remote address.

Anyways, have you tried using a temp folder?

Legolass

yeah i have tried that :(

the mod is sitting on the 'installed mods' page but its like its has not installed, the 'wow.gif' image that should go into the /themes/default/images/bbc folder is not there

Installing to a temp folder means you will have to do a little manual work, but just popped in my head .. Have you tried clearing your cache after installing the MOD?

Legolass

do you mean my browser cache? yes i cleared that.

here are the files that have unpacked into the temp folder for the 2 mods i have installed at the moment (wow tooltips and simple audio video embedder)
QuoteAutoEmbedMediaPro.english-utf8.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro.english.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro.template.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro.xml
AutoEmbedMediaPro2.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro2.template.php
AutoEmbedMediaPro2.xml
AutoEmbedMediaProInstall.php
AutoEmbedMediaProInstall2.php
AutoEmbedMediaProUnInstall.php
changelog.txt
mediaprocache.php
package-info.xml
readme.txt
ReadMe.txt
redirect.txt
UnInstall.php
wow.gif
wowhead_1_x.xml
wowhead_2_x.xml
wowhead_2_xold.xml

do you know where i need to put these files?

IceXaos

Hold up on the temp install.  You didn't seem to have permission issues or anything, so try installing it normal, then clear your site cache, then browser cache.  Lets see how it ends up, then go from there.

Site cache can be cleared at Admin > Maintenance > Forum Maintenance > Routine
At the bottom, you'll see the option "Empty the cache file".

Do that AFTER installing the MOD normally, without errors.

okay i tried installing normally and i got the old 'You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!' error. so i created a temp folder and tried again , i got the same error. arrrrghhh!!

EDIT: sorry i forgot to chmod the temp folder it installed after i changed that

Bad Legolass! :P

You shouldn't ever do that ...

IceXaos

Sorry .. I am also trying to think of what your issue may be, but I gotta look around a little.  You may have stumped me.

IceXaos

On the permissions page, does it say they're all writable?  I would guess so, but just double-checking.  If it does, do the files inside the packages directory have proper permissions?

Legolass

yes all writable on permissions page and all 777 in packages directory, and the packages directory itself is 777

You really shouldn't stick everything world-writable, but sorry to tell you I'm not sure what's wrong.  Hopefully someone will pop in and help ya out.

Legolass

aww okay thanks for trying anyway :) much appreciated

If it wouldn't be a big deal for ya, I would suggest reinstalling SMF.  You may have had an issue with trying to install multiple ways & maybe caching the unchanged files, so you couldn't see that they were even written to.  Also, if you had permission problems, you may have written to certain files multiple times, or many other possibilities.

Now, to go way off topic, the watermelon vs face video was entertaining.  I loved the, "Well, we have to finish.". :)
Sorry, I'm a troll.

Legolass

haha! if i reinstall will i not lose all the posts and have to start from scratch with boards etc?

You can back up the database, and insert it into the new database.  By the way, I said it like that because I wouldn't remove your current forum, but use another subdirectory and set it up.  If it's solved from that, you can always move the forum to the current directory, and run the settings correction file.

Legolass

hmm could this be the answer to my problem? i tried to install the forum in a subdirectory and got this error
Quote!!Critical Error!
The installer has detected the mod_security module is installed on your web server. Mod_security will block submitted forms even before SMF gets a say in anything. SMF has a built-in security scanner that will work more effectively than mod_security and that won't block submitted forms.

IceXaos

I would definitely say that may be a possible answer to your problems.  Are you running this from a home server, or are you hosted?

/e/ Do you have access to the configuration files of your web server?

Legolass

hosted on web-mania

IceXaos

Check my last post.  Sorry, I tried to not double-post, but I think I edited too late.

Legolass

would that be in phpmyadmin?

No, but from that response, I would say you don't.  No offense meant by that.  You will probably have to contact your host to get an answer on that.

Legolass

no problem, i am sending them an email as we speak :) thanks again

No problem.  If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask, but if you're done, please tick this solved.

Legolass

still working on it!

Legolass, just a few suggestions to add; some things to consider:  Do set your directories permissions to 755 and your files to 644.  Set the "temp" directory (that you created inside your Packages folder) to 777.  However, just a comment about permissions:  they may appear to change when you set them but if you do not own the directories and files on your server, then setting permissions will not work correctly.  To check for ownership, log into your host-provided control panel and access your File Manager.  Look at the "owner" columns and, if you see your own username/groupname then you do own those particular files and directories.  If you see something else (an example might be "Apache") then you do not.  If you do not, you will need to "chown" to regain ownership.  If you don't know how to do this, your server can assist you.  Speaking of your server, do ask them if mod security is on and, if so, ask them to turn it off.  (Unfortunately, not every server will do this.)  Also, ask them if PHP Safe Mode is on.  If so, turning this off may help your mods to install correctly.

:)
My apologies, but I am taking a break from accepting PM requests for support.  If I am not currently assisting you, please do not ask as long as this notice is posted.  Thank you.

Have you solve this Legolass? If you did or in need of further assistance, please do update.

Legolass

hi there sorry for the delay in replying. i never did sort the issue... until web-mania accidentally WIPED my entire forum. they were looking into a permissions issue with the databases and just cleared it!! i was so mad you would not believe. i have yet to hear from their management after the live chat person could not help me so we moved our site to godaddy

since the site move every mod has worked, so it must have been an issue with web-mania

thanks for the help tho guys

Garou

I just stumbled across this Are you talking about my mod, WoW - World of Warcraft Tooltips?

If you are the main reason the mod doesn't work is due to a conflict between the Java script included in the mod written by Horus (from the Wowhead forums) and Mod_Security an anti hacking tool used by many, if not most,  webhosts. The process used in the script uses a trick similar to something some hackers use to infect websites. Since this script communicates only with Wowhead your chances of being hacked are almost impossible, short of someone taking over Wowhead itself and changing the way things are done on their end.

Short of getting your host to change the rules for Mod_Security for your site or switching to a host that doesnt use Mod-Security, this mod probably isn't going to work for you.

Ive been looking at other ways to work around this mess and I stumbled across http://www.wowhead-tooltips.com/ They offer a paid solution ($25) that puts tooltips in your forum but I haven't purchased the mod from them myself. Chances are they use something entirely different from what I'm doing and even if they are, reverse engineering their script and incorporating it into mine could be legally problematic.

Arantor wrote a mod currently maintained by Robbo_ for the game Aion called [ur=http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2085l]Aion Syndication[/url], it creates tooltips for that game but I haven't looked into how it works. It could be that the system used by wherever the mod getting the tooltip information from is completely different then the way Wowhead is set up.  None the less perhaps Robbo_ might be willing to convert the mod to work for Warcraft.

Aside from my personal feelings about SMF at the moment I'm still trying to find a better fix for the Mod_Security issue with this mod as the base scripts used in it are portable to other web publishing systems such as VB, WP, etc. Mind you they have  the same issues with the scripts and Mod_Security that SMF does, which is probably the reason Horus abandoned the project long before I picked it up.

Legolass

hi thanks for that, but as i said all my mods work fine now since i made the move to godaddy, so i can only assume it was a problem with web mania, i mailed them about mod_security and i got a reply saying something along the lines of 'we see your problem was solved with the live chat so the issue is now closed' erm - i hadnt spoken to live chat!

thanks for the info though, it could help others with this issue!
