Updating to smf2 RC3 didn't go so well

Hi all. I am new here. I managed to break the forum I have been administering while trying to install reCAPTIA after some spamming trouble. Anyway, I thought updating to a newer release might fix the problem (certainly not worse as no forum either way). I tried the upgrade package and it failed, so I installed a new forum over the old one. I made a backup first and then wrote the backed up data back over the new forum directories. The new forum seems to work just fine, but none of the old data was picked up. Any idea how I can bring the old data into the new forum? There wasn't much there, so I need to start over, that is not a huge deal.

Thanks in advance

The data is in the database. You need to use the old database with the new install. Make sure your settings in settings.php connect to the original database. Then copy the large upgrade files in place of the old forum. Then run upgrade.php.

Close but no cigar. I still only get a nice shiny new interface with only the default board and me as the only user. If I log into mysql, I can see that the data from the old forum is in the database I have the new forum pointing at. Everything appears to be correct. I am not sure why the upgrade didn't work?

The same thing happened with me but my server was doing a Kernal Upgrade at the same time. I do not know if that is going to cause any problems with it but maybe contact your server and see if they were doing anything on their end while you were doing your upgrade. They told me there would be "unforseen issues" while it was going on.

well, Double check and did i say check again?? :)

Just get the Forums Mysql DB info from your Cpanel and update the settings. It should work and show all your posts, it worked for me after i screwd up trying to upgrade my forum ..

then I had to do a fresh install, pointing to the old DB gave back all my data.... :)

I have checked every DB setting I know of. The database name is smf_forum with the prefix smf_. This is the setting in the forum admin panel and can be confirmed by checking mysql manually. While in mysql, I looked at the data in the tables and it is the data I want, so I don't understand. Is there somewhere else that needs the database name? BTW, I am admin of the server this forum is on so I can make server changes if need be. I have not upgraded recently.

did u create the DB : smf_forum, when installing SMF ? normally a cpanel would create DBs with random names...  ???

Try downloading repair_settings.php and placing it in the root of your forum install and then run it. Make sure all of the info is correct and save. See if that helps.

Sorry for being slow about replying. Homework has gotten in the way. Repair settings didn't help. When I installed, I let smf create the database and then I pointed it back at the original. There are no stray databases, though. Mysql only lists 4 databases, 2 of which were there before there was a forum and the other two created for the forum. The second should not be in use currently. I will overwrite it with the original forum as well and see if that makes a difference. Somehow I doubt it will.

YOur database needs upgrading as well, simply swapping will not work.

Use a large upgrade package and run the upgrade.php with old database associated.
