Okay, I'm a novice at this forum stuff but not entirely daft when it comes to techie stuff, so don't give up quite yet! I learn fast.

We have a website for work built with WebPlus X4. We are looking to add a forum and you have come highly recommended to us... this leaves me with a few questions. Firstly, is one way easier than another to upload to the website? Secondly, am I likely to run into any specific problems that anyone is aware of and thirdly, anything else I should be aware of that would be helpful to know before embarking on this project?

Thank you in advance!

If you place SMF in a folder of it's own, and make a (preferably) dedicated database for it, and have MySQL and PHP support, then you shouldn't likely run in to any trouble. The easiest, most surefire way to install SMF (in my opinion) is to download the whole installation package, and extract it to a folder of it's own on your server, (For example http://example.tld/smf )and then follow the installation script (http://example.tld/smf/install.php)

All installed on server etc. have the SMF Installer page up, all is good so far - however...

Cannot connect to the MySQL database server with the supplied data.

If you are not sure about what to type in, please contact your host.
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
Click here to try this step again.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance...

Okay, that's a good question - I don't know too much of the server side of things myself though,
but I stumbled on to this a while back, and it let me to understand it is a simple setting thing...

Thanks Lex, unfortunately it's almost like reading some prehistoric language for me  :-[

I think I understand why it's happening a bit better after reading your link, not sure how to fix it though, even after reading that page. Going to grab something for lunch and have another read.

Thank you all of you for your help so far, it is very much appreciated.

Are you hosting yourself, or are you on some hosting service? If you are a client of something like GoDaddy, then they should be able to help you directly. ( For example, GoDaddy shared hosting doesn't offer a localhost DB, and instead you need a direct address to it. )

Using BTbusiness to host the site, might try contacting them directly.

Will keep you updated - I'll get there eventually with your help I'm sure!

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Probably best you ask them, since how to handle that depends on their server setup. :)

So far I have been directed to here;

I'm still talking to them but I suspect I'll be asking for more help soon  :-[

JPND

Wow, no idea how but I got past that first page - wish me luck with the second!  :o

Ooooh

Congratulations, the installation process is complete!

Don't ask me how, cos it was a case of trial and error...

Your installation directory is still writable. It's a good idea to chmod it so that it is not writable for security reasons.

How do I do this ^?

Thank you so much so far, I'm sure you'll be sick of me before too long!

This would be done for example through an FTP client like FileZilla, or through your hosting control panel, and set permissions to the folder you installed SMF in so that the folder isn't writable to everyone. Not exactly required, but not a bad idea either.

How do I chmod? / what is chmod?
