I tried to use webinstall.php to install SMF because it sounds really good, BUT, the program won't work. I typed in my URL (http://www.domain.com/webinstall.php [nofollow]) to access to webinstall.php file and after I click on continu I get the following message on my screen: "Security error." I can not install SMF successfully now.

Hi, Gebruiker and welcome to SMF! :)

Can you ask your host if they have admin security enabled?

If so, you'll need to ask them to disable it. Temporarily, at least.

I am chatting with them now, but they don't seem to understand the problem...

Hostgator modified the webinstall file and I came through the first step:

(6:09:09 PM) Thomas Co: Looking at the script now
(6:09:12 PM) Me: (leave blank if you don't have a membership.)
(6:09:20 PM) Thomas Co: did leave blank
(6:09:25 PM) Me: Fine.
(6:10:02 PM) Me: And this is the topic: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=407438.msg2837431
(6:12:46 PM) Thomas Co: The 'admin security enabled' is not a setting we have for PHP on our system it most likely is something with the script
(6:13:31 PM) Thomas Co: I suggest you check back with the SMF Support Team and check with them on how to disable it
(6:13:39 PM) Thomas Co: in the script
(6:14:24 PM) Thomas Co: we are looking at it now but this is really the SMF teams issue
(6:15:39 PM) Me: Okay, I posted your comment on the forum and I hope they will respond to it quickly.
(6:16:00 PM) Thomas Co: We just modified the script and it is fixed
(6:16:12 PM) Thomas Co: give it a try now
(6:17:32 PM) Thomas Co: (my name here) hows it going?
(6:18:09 PM) Thomas Co: Hello
(6:18:28 PM) Me: Okay, I will
(6:19:02 PM) Me: Yes, it worked. Perfect! How did you guys do that?
(6:19:39 PM) Me: Maybe I can post it on the SMF forum and they can make it a FAQ
(6:20:14 PM) Thomas Co: OK hold on
(6:20:32 PM) Me: Thanks
(6:22:21 PM) Thomas Co: line 553 and 554 were commented out
(6:22:58 PM) Thomas Co: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
(6:23:29 PM) Thomas Co: (my name here)?
(6:24:09 PM) Me: Okay, I will place that on the forum. Thank you very much!!

But now I am getting the following error message:

Warning: unpack() [function.unpack]: Type H: not enough input, need 1, have 0 in /home/*******/public_html/mydomainname.com/webinstall.php on line 1145

The installer was unable to download the archive (smf_2-0-rc4_install.tar.gz) from the server. Please try using the regular installer package instead.

Click here to try this step again.

Okay, i don't feel like I want to do this the whole day today. So I will look for another solution.

Webinstall does not work with every server configuration.  IMHO it is much simpler to install things manually.  Take a look at the link in my signature and in about 10 minutes you will have it installed.

But why do you have this "webinstall" option available then? It sounds attractive to me.

Webinstall does not work with every server configuration.

It works with most.

You just got lucky. :(

Most of the reported problems are with shared servers because there are so many ways those can be set-up.  It's worth trying if you like, and like the info page says, if it don't work, just download one of the packages and install it manually.
