What is difference between Private and Protected groups?

Group Type - Here you can select the type of group you want this membergroup to be. You have the following options:

• Private - Membership to a group has to be manually assigned for a member
• Requestable - Membership to the group can be requested by having a user go to their profile and selecting the Group Membership link
• Free - Like above, except membership can be automatically given to member when requested
• Post Based - Membership to group only granted when member meets specified post count

V.2 RC4 lists another type of board:

• Protected (Only administrators can manage and assign)

What is the difference between Private and Protected? The man page does not explain the permissions- just repeats their brief description.

I haven't looked at the code, but if I had to guess, Private membergroups can still have members assigned to it by the group moderator or anyone who can assign members to groups, whereas protected groups can only be managed by admins.
