Hosted by Hostgator, getting 403 errors on upgrade to 1.1.12?

I was having the same problem several people were having here - 403 error when trying to upgrade to 1.1.12 from 1.1.11, regardless of how you approached it. I noticed that a lot of them were hosted by Hostgator, as I am. Rather than attempt to post on every post that mentions Hostgator, I though I should post one post, and admin can take this info to do with as they will. :)

I contacted Hostgator support asking why I was recieving a 403, and support there told me "This error was due to the URL the updated was attempting to use conflicting with a security rule in place on the server." They whitelisted my domain for this rule and I proceeded with the upgrade successfully.

I don't know who the fault lies with - Hostgator for their rule or SMF for their conflicting of it, but there you go - it's fixable. It's probably worth quoting the update url (that's what I did) and asking Hostgator support to whitelist your domain for whatever rule is causing the issue.

I still had a problem with ManageSmileys.php despite no memory of editing that file (I suppose I could have in a previous manual upgrade), so I downloaded the file provided in the following post:

any idea why i would get a 500 internal sever error when upgrading to 1.1.12?
the upgrade gets to package servers then stalls out with the error message: Internal Server Error.

when i took a backup of this database, imported it onto my server, the upgrade went as expected, flawless. the host says its a permissions thing, folders should be 755 files 644 which they are yet i get this error. the host insists its not them, (right). thats why it upgrades on my server ok but not on theirs.

any thoughts on why this would occur?
keep smiling, they'll always wonder what your up too.....

I also had the same problem and never found a solution for it.

Backup data and reinstall using quickinstall you can find it in Software/Services menu @ hostgator CP

I had a flawless upgrade from 1.11 to 1.12 with Hostgator.  I had to manually edit the managesmileys.php file, but everything went just fine.

Not sure, but I did receive this notice this afternoon when I attempted to upgrade the forum from the admin control panel of SMF.

99.***.***.** Due to high traffic from unauthorized sites (also known as pirate or hacker sites), we have been forced to prevent access from various IP address blocks. We have never been required to do this until May 2005. It comes with regret that we have had to use this procedure. Unfortunately, requests to various ISP's to contact these unauthorized sites has failed and we were left with no alternative. You are being presented with this screen/error message due to the above situation and unfortunately, you IP address is within the restricted range. Please be advised that our course of action is not intended as malicious. It is our hope that sometime in the future, we might be able to remove the restrictions. We thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter.

I only moved my domains to a new host (Hostgator) in the last few months and now I'm seeing these types of messages. Time to manually upgrade I suppose.
