Hi, I'm currently on smf 1.1.11  and wanting to upgrade to smf 2 RC4

For the past few weeks, I've slaving and obsessing with learning the new style of SMF2 RC4.  We have a test site as a sub-domain on our original site, and have made A LOT of progress.

Here's my questions.

1) Can the tables members, boards, message be exported from the old site to the new site through phpMyAdmin?

2)  If not, then if i do the package manager upgrade to SMF2 RC4 from our original site, would it be possible to edit the folders (sources, themes, etc.)  and files like (index.php, setting.php, SSI.php, etc.)  and replace them with the folders & files with the ones from our test site.

I really don't want to lose all this work we've been doing.

3)  Or, will we just have to upgrade in the package manager, start everything from default?

thank you for your time.  Hope I haven't wasted all this time & work :(

Hi, unfortunately the upgrade can not be done using the package manager. You need to upload all of the files overwriting the existing files and then running upgrade.php.

Upgrading SMF

By the sounds of what you are doing, you are creating a new theme. So just save it such and add it after you upgrade. You should also be able replace any source files you have modified after the upgrade also.

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer. If that fails, read the manual.

Alright, that sounds a little reassuring  :)

When i do upgrade, does it become like an SMF 2 RC4 fresh install ...  OR are all the current packages upgraded to RC4 as well.  And are all the current smf 1.1.11 themes kept and upgraded, or are they lost?

Also, additions like  member awards, shop items, all those will remain the same, too?  Or we going to have to manually re-add every one again, and put them in each members profiles again?

Is there a way for me to copy my original forum's database, so i have it to test an upgrade on, without affecting the site members are on?

Sorry, to be asking to much, just want to be prepared. :)

Kays

You will loose all of your mods. 1.1.x mods are not compatible with 2.0 So look for updated versions of your mods. Most should reinstall without loss of data.

The upgrade will also attempt to convert your current themes also. But this might not go as well as expected depending on what changes were made to them.

You can use phpMyAdmin to backup your database. There's also the option to do so in the Admin CP.

How do I backup my database?
How do I restore a database backup?

Alright, I'm understanding a little more.  Just one more question that popped in my head.

If i update my original site to RC4 , then wouldn't i be able to export the members, boards, messages  tables to the test site?

Kays

Yes, you can do that. But I wouldn't update the original forum until I know that the changes needed are functioning on the test forum.

Create a 1.1 test forum and upload a current database backup. Then upgrade that to 2.0 and use it as your test forum. This way you will get an idea of what's involved in the upgrade.

Just don't do the upgrade of your production forum until you are comfortable and know that things like themes and mods do work properly.

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer. If that fails, read the manual.
