Hi all,

I am coming to you for confirmation of my point of view before I start migrating.

Currently I have an SMF forum version 1.1.11 running at a host A. I will be moving the forum at a host B and would like to use the opportunity to install version 1.1.12.

For test purposes I could backup the database and restore it on the host B after creating a specific database; so backup and restore work fine.

So to do this migration I thought to:

  • install the smf forum version 1.1.12 on host B
  • put the forum on host A to maintenance mode
  • backup the database on host A
  • restore the database on host B
  • turn off maintenance mode
  • put a redirection to host B on host A (that point still needs to be clarified as I do not have access to the server of host A to upload an html redirection index file)

I think this will work fine. I will probably have some issues with the difference in the tables' definitions between version 1.1.11 and 1.1.12 but I think I can manage these. I'm not a newbie at SQL.

What do you think about my migration procedure? Am I correct or will I run into lots of trouble?

Thanks a lot for your answers ...

:)

If that was me, I'd backup, make the upgrade, then migrate.

Each to their own, though. ;)

thanks for your answer K@

actually  it doesn't matter in which order you do it as everything's migrated to another host. nothing gets overwritten so nothing gets lost ;)

Oh, of course!

I'd just do it that way, myself, so that what I'm transferring over is the finished product, as it were.

Upgrading from 1.1.11 to 1.1.12 is a doddle, though.

Just get this:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_1.0.20_1.1.12.tar.gz

Upload it to your Packages directory, then browse to Admin>Packages to apply it.

Easy as that! :)

Ok, so if I'm right I just need to install version 1.1.11 on the new host B, then backup the DB from host A, then restore it to host B and finally upgrade on host B from 1.1.11 to 1.1.12 by applying the patch.

I need to stress out that I do not have an FTP access to the old host A, so that I can't copy the public html files as described in this topic --> http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=489

I you have any idea on how I could manage to get them without having to do the whole forum, you are welcome ...

Thanks ...

as long as there is no custom code in the old forum, you do not need access to the files to do a file backup, you just need the database.

petit-pere

thanks illori,

I have the database restored on the new host. But I think I need at least an index.php file stored to display the forum or am I wrong?

Illori

you need to install all the files from the large upgrade package and the create the settings.php file to match your current settings on the new server.

Any update on this?  Were you able to successfully migrate you forum?
