Changed Hosting Plans, SMF Down!

HI all,

So in order to add other features to our site I was asked to move from the godaddy linux hosting plan to the windows hosting plan.  Seemed like no big deal.  However, after the transition the forum is totally down.

We called and asked about the problem and was told we need to fix the connecting string to the database.  I did some research and saw that the settings.php needed to be modified to show the new absolute path to the boards and the sources so i modified the lines below to where the new site is located on their server.

########## Directories/Files ##########
# Note: These directories do not have to be changed unless you move things.
$boarddir = 'D:/Hosting/ipmsorlando';      # The absolute path to the forum's folder. (not just '.'!)
$sourcedir = 'D:/Hosting/ipmsorlando/Sources';      # Path to the Sources directory.

This however has not allowed the forums to come up.  Just FYI, our site is just the forum hence the directories are as they are.

So my question is what can I do next to get it back up?  I backed up the site before we had godaddy move the hosting from the linux to the windows box.  I can see the simple machine forum database (mysql database) in the control panel for our site is there just as before.  I'm at a loss at this point.  I've read several simular stories on the forum here but there were different paths to resolving it.

Any help is appreciated!

You must not link from their local drives.

Use the path used in your FTP client.

Use the repair_settings.php file. That will detect the paths automatically. Click the blue values and save the new changes.

for me this is simply

f t p://www.ipmsorlando.com

drop the ftp portion then and just go with www.ipmsorlando.com  ??

just want to clarify, i know the old listing in there for the linux side was quite different, something along the lines of
/i/p/m/ipmsorlando.....  i don't recall the whole string, it's saved at home where i am not currently.

I suggest using the repair_settings way since then you have no troubles of looking up things.

Ok, so i'm a total noob with this, after I download the settings file, exactly how would I use it?  upload it to the site and run it how?  I'm sure you have a link to how to run it or something.  I bet it's so easy i'll feel dumb afterwards.

thanks again

Just upload it to your SMF directory, and run it in your browser.

May I get your forums URL? And what folder did you upload it to? Oh and what folder is SMF located in?

You must upload it inside your forum folder.

Can you set the permissions to 777 for that file (if available)? Maybe we aren't allowed to read it with the current permissions.

Eeh...no. I'm lost to the very end.

Try renaming the file to something like repair.php. If that doesn't help I can't help you further..

well crap.  it appears that the permissions is a linux only thing, my site is now on windows box.  i tried moving it the forum files to a new folder and launching it here, just to see if it will work, same problem!!

i'll see what else i can do to run the thing, thanks for the help sofar

JimM

You may need to contact your host for the correct connection information for the database.  Not sure why you would want to move from linux hosting to windows though.

Upload repair_settings.php to the same directory that your SSI.php is located in.

Just an update, as I got it fixed.  Apparently Godaddy has more than one type of windows server, the one they put us on did not support php files running on it, they moved my site to another windows server that did have php support, I ran the settings repair php file, got all but the database name but I pulled that from the site control panel and changed the values and it was up in seconds!!

Thank you for all the help, after I made the server change, the repair tool worked!
