Time to Move to a New Host

I can easily make back ups and such with the Back Up Creation Tool someone told me about here.  I can easily enough move all files to the new hosting company.  What I do not know how to do is to take the back up and install it in the new hosting company.  This side of it scares the crap out of me.  I am 100% clueless and have always dreaded this part of owning a forum.  It's actually the reason I did not move hosting companies a long time ago.

Simply put, I have no clue how to set it all up.  I am not sure if I can just copy all the files over and then run some magic installer and the forum is up and running or what.  My guess is that it is more involved than that.  Setting up and kind of database, making sure paths and such match?  Just clueless.

Can anyone guide my ways?  Does anyone do it for a fee?  I would rather pay and have it done right than to spend a day of trying to figure it out myself.

Thanks!

Illori

have you asked your new host if they will move you over as part of you starting to use them?

you will have to create a database and use phpmyadmin to import the old database, then you need to add the new connection information in the settings.php file. you will also need to run What is repair_settings.php? to fix all your paths to point to the new location.

Yeah, I was afraid there was a few steps, it makes sense.

Still willing to pay anyone to do it for me if they are willing.

That extra step is very easy to do. You upload the tool at your forum root and then run it. But if you want to hire someone then please post at this board.

Moving to a new host doesn't have to be a stressful situation.  In fact we have some documentation to help you along.

How do I move my SMF forum to a different host?

As has been mentioned, depending on the host; some will move your forum for you.  Just depends on the host.
