Yes, there is a lot of stuff on doing the manual upgrade, but just bare with me a second.

I was running 1.1.11 just fine, I had installed "anti bot unrecognizable form" to help with my bot issue.  Hosting with godaddy, I usually just allow them to upgrade through their site manager, never had any issues doing so.  So I used it again to allow it to upgrade but it failed.  I then had the option to roll back the install to the prior version, and I did that.  However, my forums now tell me they are version 1.1.7!!  Not sure how it rolled back to 1.1.7 at all, but my sources says it's 1.1.5 and default templates and languages are 1.1.  Godaddy's fix is to uninstall and reinstall the forum.

What would you experts suggest?

If the answer is Uninstall/Reinstall, how can I be certain to Save my forum structure, users, posts, etc...???

Thank you all for the great support here!

thanks for the laugh, however, I have to admit hosting with them has been nothing but good for me.

I wanted to add that I did uninstall the "anti bot unrecognizable form" mod, but not until after the update failed as I figured it might be part of the problem.

In reading another post on simular update issues, it was suggested to run the Large Upgrade as that should take care of most problems.  However it does say to backup one's database.  So that leaves me to ask, Under Admin, Forum Maitainance, Backup Database, obvisously this allows me to backup my database, does this also backup all the users, posts and forum structure (I do see save table structure as a seperate check)  I just want to verify.  Loosing the site now because I was hasty would stink big time so I'm gonna ask a lot of questions.

thanks again!

Never use anything but the SMF Administration Center to update your SMF Forum. Never use CPanel, Fantastico, or any other web management software that hosts dish out.

I would recommend uninstalling all mods, uploading a fresh copy of SMF 1.1.12, running repair_settings.php to fix the db paths (if applicable) and bam. Done and done

cpanel has nothing to do with administrating smf, it is for administrating your site, please dont confuse the two.

Technically, you can, if you use installation scripts like Craptastico ;)

but that does not control how you configure your forum after it is installed.

Baby Daisy

Yes, it does.

Some programs for Cpanel will manage your web software for you.

it is very dangerous to upgrade any software via the software installer. the installers will overwrite the existing files. so any custom work you may have done will be deleted out.

well I noted that the "upgrade" from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8 was availble to install, so I did, and I did this again and again and patched it to 1.1.12.  All is right with the world.

thanks anyway
