I dont want to be a bother..but i need some help starting. This is the first time for me doing something like this.

I already got the package i needed to download, and i am running linux ubuntu 9.04.

But i need help knowing how to start my domain and what to do to get my website up and running

We were all new once, so don't feel too bad.

If you don't have server admin experience, you might be best served getting a hosting provider. Running your own server is complex and you can unknowingly create security issues.

If you do wish to still proceed, we can provide some general instructions on getting started. For more specific advice, asking about setting up a server on the Ubuntu forums will get you much more targeted help.

Well at this point, this is all new to me. I can easily find out how to get a domain name, but i am not sure how to get a host. If you wouldnt mind, would you explain a little more? Maybe give me a few more details that can help me before i go to the linux forums

evilxwoolf

Sorry for the double post, but would godaddy be a good host/place i can buy a domain?

青山 素子

GoDaddy is okay for domains, but I'd stay away from their hosting. For hosting recommendations, check out our hosting board and also look at Web Hosting Talk.

Okay, and one last major question before i move on. How do i actually obtain my website? Like how am i able to use the forum of my own?

I just want to be sure about things before i buy my domain so i dont get stuck in the middle of it and i am paying for a domain that i am not using

Once you get a domain and hosting, your hosting provider can help you get the domain linked yo your hosting account. Once that's done, you can install SMF using the host's provide control panel. Most good hosts will be happy to help you with getting things started.

Then after i buy my domain and find hosting.. do i build my own website? Or is it premade where i just costomize it?

kat

Depends on the host.

Mine was just a clear, empty space that I could put whatever I liked on.

Best way, for me. :)

Is it possible to put an image as a banner for my posts? I have a banner premade and i was wondering if it was possible to do that

kat

I'm not with you, on that.

Can you explain what you want in a different way?

Do you mean a signature, like the blue thing, below this?

Do you mean here, or on your own site?

evilxwoolf

Actually, and i feel like an idiot for saying this, but i forgot to put the image link in

kat

Doh!

I keep forgetting to add attachments, like that.

evilxwoolf

I put the link it, but forgot to put the image code in for it to show the thing in

kat

Where is it that you're talking about, though?

Here?

evilxwoolf

I was just trying to find out how to put an image signature on my posts and pms. I created my own website today using SMF. I needed it for that.

kat

You need to actually put the image somewhere.

If you look at my sig, you can see this:

It's a picture on my website.

Then, you need to go to your profile and put the link to the image, there, with {IMG} {/IMG} tags around it.

evilxwoolf

Yeah i finally figured that out lol. Took me a while to remember to do that tho
