I am running a forum hosted on GoDaddy and I have VERY little experience with these things in general.  I am trying to upgrade from the 1.1.10 to the newest.  I looked at the lit on the subject but it is way over my tiny head.  I went to the downloads and downloaded the 1.1.11 zip to my harddrive.  Then uploaded it to my forum but I get a message that says...

"The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted. "

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, when I try to do the auto download from the forum I get this message.

"Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager."  "530 end"

I have no idea what I'm doing....

please add a folder "temp" to your packages folder, then use the links in your admin panel in order to upgrade your forum. please make sure you do a full backup before you attempt the upgrade in case there are issues. How do I backup my database?. I think in part you are downloading the wrong archive for the upgrade and you are missing the temp folder to fix the other issue.

also a small note please do not bump a topic within 24 hours, some people consider that spam and therefore will not reply to offer support. we do have a modify button you can use to add additional information.

Thanks for the help. I appologize for bumping the thread, many of the forums I am on just add your next post to your last if no one else has posted.

Welcome to SMF.

Were you able to get your forum upgraded?  You can upgrade from 1.1.10 to 1.1.12 by using the large upgrade package.  This entails overwriting your forum files with all the files from the upgrade package. If you were wanting to just do the package manager updates from 1.1.10 to 1.1.11 then 1.1.12, you will need to make sure the folder that Illori mentioned is in the /Packages directory.

Feel free to read the upgrade information that is linked in my signature.

Thanks for the help, I will check out the link you mentioned.  Unfortunately I am not well versed in computer activities and this is very difficult for me. I am attempting to teach myself as much as possible so I can keep our community forum going but it is hard with lack of experience.

We are currently using hxxp:godaddy.com [nonactive] to host the forum and I've heard it is not the best way to go about it.  Again, we are doing this as we don't have the resources or experience to handle our own server.  Any recommendations there?

Illori

take a look at the hosting board here for opinions on different hosts.

Is this issue solved or do you still require assistance?

@dingerj66 - There is lots of documentation available here for you to read about upgrading your forum.  One of the more complete documents is linked in my signature.

@ Illori - sometimes it's better to answer the questions ask and then mention that they should have opened a new support topic if needed.  Every question doesn't necessarily need a new topic. :)

I'm sorry, this is still an issue and spammers are killing me since I cannot upgrade my security.  I tried upgrading with the large file as mentioned and I get this message.

"An Error Has Occurred!
The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted."

I honestly can only get about as far as backing up the old site before I get lost in the instructions.  I feel computer stupid as this is probably simple stuff for everyone here but it is beyond me.  I still have no idea where I was supposed to save a "temp" folder or what it even means.

Any help would be appreciated. I wish I could just pay someone to do this, lol.

nanoty,
How about you try doing this:
- Admin Panel
- Packages
- Click on Options
- Under "Cleanup Permissions", select "All files are writable." and then change file permissions.

Then try and do the update using the patches available here: http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/
