SMF1- SMF RC5

Hello just installed a test site through my hosts fantastico - then updated to version 1.1.13 per the warning in the admin center.
Im trying to upgrade to Rc5. I Dloaded the upgrade package and uploaded all the files. Ran upgrade.php and everything was working fine but I keep getting hung up on the dbase changes at the same step-

Please be patient - this may take some time on large forums. The time elapsed increments from the server to show progress is being made!
Executing upgrade script 1 of 2.
Executing: "Updating search cache..." (14 of 19 - of this script)

I get this error
Error!
Server has not responded for 30 seconds. It may be worth waiting a little longer or otherwise please click here to try this step again

Click here and keep getting the same thing

Its a fresh board so there should be no hangups- right?

We have had some issues with sites that have used Fantastico to install their forum.  If you are just starting out, why not just install 2.0 RC5 from the get go?  Then you don't have to worry about the upgrade this time.
