Upgraded to RC5 - now I cannot install packages

I've upgraded recently to RC5 from RC4.

The public_html folder is set at permission 750 and the server owns it.

All the folders are set as 777 for what is required.
The packages folder is set at 777
The temp folder is set at 777

Basically, when I go to install, I check in the temp folder and only files in the root of the zip are unzipping. Any folders are not unzipping.

So, I manually copy all the files to the temp folder and the package still isn't installing.

I am pulling my hair out now as I have tried everything I can think of I have been doing SMF now for many years.

I have another SMF website with exactly the same permissions etc on the folders/files and that works ok.

Also the permissions tool in SMF admin does not change anything when used.

Please help!! My website is offline at the moment - I'm willing to give admin access to someone who may be able to help
thanks

When you do the install, what actually happens?

Do you get error-messages, or what?

Heh...I came here to start a new thread on this same problem. I do believe I'll watch this topic.

Yes there are error message, unable to write to directories and files etc.
I have turned this off for the moment.

The problem seems to be creation of folders - if it's a pure edit of an existing file, those edits are now working.

I have had to chmod 777 on all files to make anything work but the permissions tool still doesn't work within SMF

Try this. I have to do this on my forum.

Upload the mod, still archived, to your Packages directory.

Then, go to Admin>Packages and apply.

Any use?

When you say "the server owns it", do you have FULL ownership of all the files?

It might pay you to visit the "tmp" directory (The one in the same place in the hierarchy as public_html, not the one inside Packages), and empty that. Maybe the cache directory, too.

Thanks for the help guys - I tried your suggestion K@ - same results.

I do have ownership of the files on the server, unless the something creates a file and then I cannot delete it etc. This usually happens if software creates it's own files in the background, ie folders, log files etc.

The TMP folder and CACHE is empty.

I give up with SMF permissions, it's brilliant software and I have been using it a long time but the permissions either work ok, or they don't and when they don't it's very difficult to track why.

I'll manage in the meantime by manually installing etc.

*update* - well, just went into permission tool and tried setting permissions to standard and it worked!
This has happened before, for some reason it doesn't work, and then later down the line, it works??

Anyway, at least it's working now but how.. I don't know!!
