Upgrade from 2.0 RC3 to 2.0 RC5 gone wrong

So I decided to do an upgrade on my forum from 2.0 RC3 to 2.0 RC5 and it didn't work, so I then decided to do a fresh install instead. Again this didn't work. So I decided to restore my back up and now this won't work! Now I'm not a wiz at this kind of stuff as it is so I have no idea what I did wrong but basically, I've lost my whole forum and need to do a fresh install or 2.0 RC5 but have it link into my already exsisting database. Is this possible? And how would I go about doing it?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Do a fresh install, then use the info from your previous Settings.php to connect your database to your fresh install.  Maybe there are other ways of doing it, but that's what I did and it worked. Although if you had a different theme installed, it might look odd until you go in your admin panel and change your theme to the default theme. Hope that helps.

Just a note... if you need help, you probably want to describe your problem a bit more than "it didn't work" because we don't know what issue you're having.

also be sure to run upgrade.php or you will run into further issues as the database will not match the files you are using.

Sorry, like I said, i'm not too good at this sort of stuff which is why I can't tell you anymore as to why it didn't work. I thought I'd followed all the steps correctly but I guess I missed something out.

So I guess I need to do a fresh install again now, I assume I leave out the Install.* and *.sql files, is that right? And would I then run the upgrade on top of the fresh install?

I already ran upgrade.php and everything seemed to go through fine so would this mean my database is already upgraded or will I need to run it again. And would it cause problems if I ran it again anyway?

Do you know which part of Settings.php I would need to change? Do I just copy everything from the original Settings.php into the new one?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just at a bit of a loose end as my site's been down all weekend now and I desperately need to fix it.

Thanks for all your help

what are you seeing that leads you to believe that it did not work?

Can you please tell us what exactly did not work when you tried to upgrade your forum and when you tried to restore the database?
