I have a website and I want to add a forum page and keep the rest of the site the same.

Can I do this?

I also have looked all over my control panel (just host) and can not figure out how to do this...  You should now be at the stage where you can upload the SMF files to your server. Initiate an FTP connection to the server and create a directory on the server. You can name the directory anything you like but "smf" or "forum" is a good choice.

Thanks for any help

Matthew K.

Hey there, and welcome to SMF!

You can definitely add an SMF forum to your website.

Here are some links that you may find helpful

OK the ftp link helped.

I am trying to use filrzilla and i have the file ready and do not know how to the host.  Do I use my url or justhost?  Do i need to contact them?

Thank you

Matthew K.

For the "host" field, put in yourdomain.com and it should work :)

I set up an ftp account:
FTP Username: [email protected]
FTP Server: ftp.michiganmountainmayhem.com [nofollow]
FTP Server Port: 21
SFTP Server Port: 22
and used..... ftp.michiganmountainmayhem.com [nofollow]
port 21 and it looked like it worked

now when i go to.....http://www.michiganmountainmayhem.com/smf/install.php  I get   Not Found
The requested URL /smf/install.php was not found on this server.

The file type I transfered was a GZ file if makes a differance.

Matthew K.

You need to download the SMF .zip and then extract the .zip on your computer, then upload all of the extracted folder contents.

Just a note...

Make sure Filezilla's "Transfer Type" is set to "binary", NOT "auto".

You'll get problems, otherwise, guaranteed.

OK unzipped and transfered all 1131 files and the url still does not work.

Maybe I am realy dum :-)

Matthew K.

Would you please provide a link to your SMF install?

really-dum

I think I found the problem.

Open up your web browser and browse to http://www.yourdomain.com/smf/install.php [nofollow] (where smf is the directory name you chose earlier).what is this?

I do not know what link you are talking about.

Matthew K.

You have to run install.php, in the directory of wherever you uploaded SMF to. For instance...michiganmountainmayhem.com is your website, if you put the forum in /forum, you'd run michiganmountainmayhem.com/forum/install.php, to setup SMF.

well there is the problem i do not know where i uploaded it to. :-[

How do I upload it to a specific spot?  Do i need to create the page first?

maybee I am realy dum

Matthew K.

You'll want to go into public_html using FileZilla, then right click and then click "Create Directory" name that directory whatever you want your forum to be.

After creating the directory, go to the directory. So you'll be at /public_html/your_directory. That's where you upload SMF. You then visit that URL by yoursite.com/your_directory/install.php to install SMF.

I am now stuck here....MySQL database name:

I went to my control panel and created a database but can not get pass this point.  probably something simple.

Matthew K.

prefix_databasename.

For instance, the prefix would be your FTP username, and the databasename would be the name of the database you created.

what do i put in for server name?

My user name is MMM
The server name is forums

Matthew K.

I think you mean the database name is forums? Then it'd be mmm_forums (I don't believe usernames can be uppercase, or even mixed case)
