Moving Topics/Posts From a 1.1.13 to a New Full 2.0rc5

After it was pointed out to me by a member visiting my recently upgraded (from 1.1.12)  1.1.13 forum on a mobile phone that my disabled wap detection was re-enabled, I decided to bin the forum and get a new 2.0rc5 version.

I'm still finding my way around the new features, but its looking very promising, especially as those visiting by mobile phone now have the option to view a full version of the site.

The immediate problem though is moving the content from the old forum over to the new one. It wasn't an upgrade, I uploaded a brand new forum, though the old forum and its files are still in my server. Is it possible to transfer the topics and posts from the old forum to the new one without having to spend a week cutting and pasting?

Oh right, so its a case of over-writing my old files with my new ones?

Seems a bit death-defying but I'll give it a go

steveraven

Tried overwriting the files as described in the upgrade link above, but all I'm getting is the old 1.1.13 forum with no sign of the upgrade to 2.0.

However - I'm using Filezilla which doesn't allow copy/paste.

So is there a way to do the above using Filezilla?

Filezilla works fine. Just tell it that you want to overwrite the files when it prompts you. Then you just need to run upgrade.php from your web browser to upgrade the database.

Thats just it - Filezilla isn't asking to over-write the files. Its just creating a new directory within a directory ad infinitum

steveraven

Right - gone about it a different way now.

Created a new directory on my host and copied all the 1.1.13 files to it
Downloaded the large upgrade of 2.0rc5
Then uploaded the unzipped upgrade files to the same directory with instructions to overwrite.
CHMODded the neccessary files to 777
Pointed my browser to domain/forum/upgrade.php

''The upgrader was unable to find some crucial files, please make sure you uploaded... blah blah blah...'' which as far as I'm aware, I did.

Whats wrong with the bloody thing?

Verify that the files that the upgrader says are missing are actually there.  It's not unusual for FTP clients to report successfull transfers even though they were not.

It wasn't done by ftp, they were uploaded directly from my desktop into my host account

Illori

how did you get them from your desktop to your host account? did you use your hosts file manager?

steveraven

Created new directory on my hosts file manager, copied all the 1.1.13 files into it, then used the hosts file manager to upload and over-write the new files, yes

Illori

did you extract the zip then upload with the file manager? or did you upload the zip and extract it with the file manager?

try uploading the zip then using the file manager to extract the zip, you are doing basically what JimM suggested and may be missing certain files.

You can't upgrade from 1.1.13 to 2.0 RC5 with the package manager.

Verify that all the files in the package were uploaded, especially the ones that the upgrader is saying are missing.  If you still can't get it to work, I would try an FTP client like FileZilla.

Okay -

Created new directory on host.
Copied entire existing 1.1.13 forum directory to new directory.
Uploaded SMF 2.0rc5 zip to new directory.
Unarchived zip with instructions to over-write existing files.
Set permissions.
Pointed browser to domain/forum/upgrade.php

Upgrading from YaBB SE!
The upgrader was unable to find some crucial files.

Please make sure you uploaded all of the files included in the package, including the Themes, Sources, and other directories.

I am therefore assuming that SMF 1 is not compatible with SMF 2 and will commence copy/pasting my posts instead of messing about any more.

JimM

It really sounds like you have some old files that are not being overwritten.  I've upgraded a number of forums to RC5 and not seen this "Upgrading from YaBB SE!" a single time.  How recently did you download the upgrade package that you are using?  Try deleting the zip that you have and download the upgrade again and see if you get the same result.

The upgrade package was downloaded immediately after I was advised to check out the 'upgrading SMF link in this thread, ie three days ago. I've used two seperate ftp clients and a multitude of different suggestions, all of which lead to the same outcome. The new install of 2.0rc5 was a doddle, but the large upgrade is a nightmare. I'm mow in the process of copy/pasting my topics from the 1x forum to the new 2x one as its far easier than climbing the walls.

JimM

OK,  well keep in mind that 2.0 is a release candidate and when it goes gold it will be the exact same process to upgrade then unless you do it all manually.  There is something no quite right about your installation if you are seeing the upgrade message that you posted.

Good luck with the copy/paste stuff. :)
