OK, in our admin section this is what it reads:
Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 1.1.4
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.13

We are wanting to do upgrades, but haven't due to concerns about the site and crashes. Please advise on how to get to where we need to be...Our host is siteground; our site (and we love your SMF, but need to have the extra options I read comes with 2.0) is goatbeat.net   there are many people that rely on it when they have issues, so we want to make this as non eventful as possible....

We are not techie guru's but want to be able to do this...

I read some on the upgrade guide, and got a little confused....

I use Firefox as my browser, do I need to do it in IE?

Siteground installed SMF for us, we just customized it some...so is it safe to assume we have the room? Our site has been up and running since about 07/08 I think..

Now, do I need to upgrade in baby steps, or upgrade straight to 2.0?

Also, read here in your tutorial:
Your forum should now be successfully converted to SMF and you can explore the new features and start using it; however, before doing so you MUST delete the upgrade.php file from the server as leaving it there can be a major security risk.

Does this only apply when converting?

Also, in looking in the ADMIN.... There is a box that says:

You're using an outdated version of SMF, which contains some bugs which have since been fixed. It is recommended that you update your forum to the latest version as soon as possible. It only takes a minute!

Is this where I do it from? Thanks in advance?

Illori

do you want to stay with the 1.1.* branch or do you want to move to 2.0? which is not a gold release yet and may be slightly more difficult to upgrade.

Candace69

I didn't know there was a difference, I had just read about some of the options in the 2.0....

We are just looking at having a few more options in moderating, making the forum more secure etc....do the newer versions before the 2.0 have more moderation options? More security options etc?

We want to do what is best and most efficient, if we need to wait on the 2.0...That's ok...

As far as upgrades, with what we have, what would be the best direction to go?

Illori

i would recommend at this time to use the package manager updates to get you up to 1.1.13 then once 2.0 goes gold then look into it. you will get all the security updates you are missing by updating to 1.1.13, there are no added features since the version you are using.

So, how do I do this?

Hope I don;t sound abrupt with just that, but I still have the original question of how to do it...If not to the 2.0, ok, but how to the 1.1.13?

Illori

in your admin panel it should have a link to upgrade you via the package manager, use those links and report back if you have any issues.

Candace69

So just click the link in the admin that says...? There are other places, just want to be sure!

yes that is the link and follow the directions unless you run into errors.

Any update on this?  Were you able to upgrade using the link in your admincp?  If for some reason that doesn't work or you have difficulty, you can obtain each update package here:  http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/

These can be applied using the package manager just like you install a mod.

Be sure and let us know how it goes.

I started a thread when we tried it, here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=425006.0;topicseen
as I ran across issues...
We ended up having to call it a night....

But I am trying what he said to do now, so hope I things go smoothly....

Candace69

I don't know which thread is being watched, so I am duplicating my error here...

Ok, I tried to do it, the way I was instructed....
and this is the error it gave me....

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

So, what now?

Candace69

ok, looking in ADMIN
even though it says that
it looks like it DID do the update
because now it says...
Forum version: SMF 1.1.5
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.13
(more detailed)

JimM

We will continue your support in the other topic for now.  This is exactly the reason we ask members to not open duplicate topics concerning the same issue. :)

I'll mark this one as solved.

@The Truth: Please open a new topic in the relevant support board with more details, your question is rather vague.
