OK, when I asked earlier, in this thread:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=424532.0
this information from my site:
Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 1.1.4
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.13

so, I went to the You're using an outdated version of SMF, which contains some bugs which have since been fixed. It is recommended that you update your forum to the latest version as soon as possible. It only takes a minute!

When I clicked the update, this was the error it gave me:

Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

WHAT Do I do next>

Candace69

Looking through the
Installations actions for "SMF 1.0.13 / 1.1.5 / 2.0 b3.1 Update":

this was the one I saw the error on:
32.    Execute Modification    ./Themes/default/languages/index.english.php    Test failed

Candace69

Anyone? Or do I need to come back another time for help?

Bigguy

The upgrade can still be done and that file added later. Make sure to back everything up (database) and then go ahead.

Candace69

Bigguy

Take it out of the .zip file and upload it to where it should go. Not to sure why it won't upgrade, it's only a language file.

EDIT: Do the upgrade first and then rename the index.english.php file that is there and upload the one from the large upgrade .zip pack.

Candace69

OK, I hope I don't sound too dumb, but I am not computer geek. When I go to do this upgrade, it doesn't give me a .zip file. It does everything automatically....

So, am I supposed to access the forum using FTP after this?

I see the index.php , looking at it now, but where is the index.english.php ? And where do I find the larger upgrade zip pack?

I am attempting this upgrade from the ADMIN section in our SMF forum, so I don't have anything locally on my computer for the upgrade...

Candace69

Also, we haven't updated since we opened the forum in 2008.
Is doing it from the admin section; doing it by the update your forum link in the admin, the best way...Or should we go to packages and apply the modifications? Then take the updates one at a time from the "live from Simple Machines" Section?

Bigguy

Doing it from the admin panel is fine. If you want to be real thorough about it then My suggestion is to have a look at this:

Upgrading SMF

It's a very simple process really. if you know how to use ftp and cpanel and you back everything up you should be good to go. :)

Candace69

It's a simple process once you do it!  ;) I am just afraid of crashing my forum. This is a little more advanced than I have done, though if you help, I think I can figure it out....Thanks in advance!

I am somewhat familiar with FTP and Cpanel...I have used them...

And, I did look through that link you gave at one point, scanned it just now....to refresh...

I went into FTP and found now where the file is in Themes that failed the test...that index.english.php - so I get what you are saying about renaming that... I have renamed stuff using FTP..

So, from that link, I found where you get the downloads...
http://download.simplemachines.org/
What do I need to download from there?

So, I tried to do a patch from the packages section, it gave me the same error on the index.english.php file, if I do this install from the admin ignoring that error.... Then What do I do?

I go in and change it's name?

Where do I get the file I need to go there? to replace it? Where do I get that download?

Bigguy

If you try the link in the admin panel it will upgrade the forum. After that we just rename the index.english.php file through ftp and upload one from the upgrade.zip file from the link you provided. Can you post or send me a link to your forum. :)

http://goatbeat.net/index.php

and this time of year is kidding, so people are having lots of questions...

So, when I get the error,

1. tell it to install anyway....

2. Rename in FTP the index.english file

I  downloaded the upgrade.zip file from the page, the "large upgrade" - smf_1-1-13_upgrade and have found the index.english.php in the themes/default/languages folder

So, use FTP to
3. Put in the themes/default/languages the index.english.php I found in the zip folder IN the same folder where I renamed the other

Bigguy

If you are getting no other errors and you have taken backups of the database then you are fine. Just so you know. We are renaming the one file just so we have the original around in case we need anything from it. If all works fine with out it then it can be deleted.

Bigguy

I guess if your going from 1.1.4 to 1.1.13 in the admin panel then you want to download the SMF 1.1.13 .zip file and get the index.english.php file out of that instead of the large upgrade pack. Sorry about that.

Candace69

Ok, I tried to do it, and this is the error it gave me....

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

So, what now?

Candace69

sorry, to duplicate, tell me which thread to use....
ok, looking in ADMIN
even though it says that
it looks like it DID do the update
because now it says...
Forum version: SMF 1.1.5
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.13
(more detailed)

Bigguy

The large upgrade pack is not to be used with the package manager. Please read this:

Upgrading SMF

Candace69

Ok, did what you said and did the install with the error.....When I got the error that it hadn't installed it, then when I saw it applied it even though it said it hadn't; I went ahead and applied the next one, it said the same thing, but applied it.

After that, I took the updates one at a time, only had one error pop up, one test failed in one of the updates... but it was to a theme we didn't use, so I installed past that, it went smooth.

There really weren't any isues after that.

Looks like I got everything updated, and all appears to be running smoothly...No complaints from anyone on the boards....

Thanks for all the help, looks like we're ok now....

Bigguy

Not a problem. Glad yuo got it sorted. :) I will mark this solved now. :)
