Hey folks.

Been trying to figure this out and can't find a clear answer.

I have SMF 1.1.13 installed with some simple mods and its working perfectly. I want to upgrade to 2.0 when it becomes available but would prefer to sort any issues with an install of 2.0 RC5.

I've installed 2.0 RC5 in a different forum folder on my server. I've also added some of the same mods. So far so good.

So, here is the question. How do i get the 2.0 RC5 forum to read a copy of my SMF 1.1.3 database with out causing issues to the existing forum?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot get a 2.0 forum to read a 1.x database. Just impossible.

You have to upgrade the database.

Upload a 1.1.13 installation and upgrade it to 2.0 RC5, with the 1.1.13 database installed of course.

Then, using your newly created forum, create a database backup and insert it into your other forum.

Got that all? ;)

Hey Yoshi2889. Thanks for the quick response.

So, to be clear.
1. I should install a second SMF forum 1.1.13 into a different forum folder on my server (/forum/SMF_2RC5).
2. Upgrade the new 1.1.13 install to 2.0 RC5
3. Should i now direct the 2.0 RC5 Upgrade to read the old original 1.1.13 database that i'm using on a live forum? Will this destroy my original forum? I want the old 1.1.13 forum to continue to operate?
4. I will now be able to test the new 2.0 RC5 database without affecting the live old 1.1.13 forum - correct?
5. Once i confirm that the new 2.0 RC5 forum is working, i can create a database backup and insert it into a new 2.0 RC5 install in the original (old) forum location.

Sorry for all of these questions but i'm a bit new to all this!

BTW, here is my current forum.

Thanks again for all your help!

You will have to take a copy of the forum database for testing purposes; there is no good way to make two forums use the same database, doubly so if there's a change in version - 2.0 has a vastly different structure to 1.1.

1. Install a second copy of the forum, same version you're using now.
2. Copy the database from the first to the second.
3. Upgrade the new forum. Make sure you're happy with it.
4. Upgrade the original forum then apply the changes you made to the test forum.

Which is what I said.

1. Yes, or you can do it locally with XAMPP.
2. Yes, with the old database you want to use on the 2.x forum.
3. After the upgrade, remove your old tables from the 2.x forum (using PHPMyAdmin) and insert the just-upgraded tables from the 1.1.13 forum.
4. I guess so.
5. Yes, you got it :P

So when, exactly, did you plan on copying the database from the original installation? If the upgrade reads the original database IT WILL MODIFY IT. It will break 1.1.13 from running. The copy must be made before any installation or upgrading begins.

I plan on BACKING UP the database from the old 1.1.13 installation, then copy it into the to-be-upgraded 1.1.13 installation.

Except that the questions asked, which you've agreed to, are for upgrading the forum without having a separate test forum actually running - the original forum is not left untouched...

Not really.

The user has TWO forums. A 1.1.13 forum and a seperate 2.0 RC5 forum.
