vb3.8.5 to SMF RC5

Try as I might the converter just seems to be doing nothing.  Having entered the paths and database password, it just gives me a message of

Converting
Successful
Recalculating forum statistics ......

Firefox's status simply shows as "done"

I can't see any changes being made to table content in the mysql database using phpmyadmin.

I'm trying to convert into a clean install of SMF RC5 - no mods etc installed.  vbulletin and smf share the same mysql database on the host.

I've tried the only converters available for vbulletin:
Vbulletin to SMF 2-0-rc4  and Vbulletin 3.7 to SMF 2-0-rc4

Is it because a specific converter is needed for SMF RC5, or alternatively that my vbulletin board has a version that the converter can't handle?

The vbulletin board had around 3000 threads, 75,000 posts and 650 members (although most of those were banned spammers). The vb database is around  60MB in size, including embedded attachments.   I'd be happy just to recover the posts attibuted to user names, even if the user accounts weren't recoverable.
