Please advise how to change icons to png instead of gif?

for example i wanna change

on.gif to on.png
off.gif to off.png
new_some.gif to new_some.png
new_none.gif to new_none.png

etc..

in theme Core

look in the Board.template.php and look for those gid files, then change it to png.
