Ok so the server says my shoutbox is causing a big load on the server... the one im using is part of a portal.

My question is this... has anyone tried an external site that can be used as your own chat room and just link it as a button in the tab section?

if you dont mind others having access to your chat, you might be interested in something like irc where you can setup a channel on a server just for your users and people can login and chat from anywhere, a few mods that might help http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;basic_search=irc

Is your shoutbox set to "Real time"?

If so, it'll be that that's causing the high server load.

That needs to be disabled.

Maybe set to zero?

most likely you would use an existing irc server which would not be on your server, but if you have dedicated vps hosting you may be able to run your own.
