I am currently running 1.1.11 and am trying to upgrade (install patches) via the Admin control panel in SMF.  I keep getting this message:

LainaaAn Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

So, I did some searching on this forum and found the instructions to "chmod" the files and folders to make them writable.  When I attempt, using FileZilla, I get this message:

LainaaCommand:   SITE CHMOD 644 .htaccess
Response:   550 CHMOD 644 .htaccess: Operation not permitted

If I attempt to CHMOD a folder I get the "operation not permitted" message as well.

Am I doing it wrong?

A little background, I am using hxxp:1and1.com [nonactive] and direct installed SMF via their "click n build" tool.  When I visited that section of the C-Panel today, I see this message,

LainaaImportant note:

For security reasons, the following changes and modifications are not possible in Click-n-Build applications:

    * Installation of new templates, new plugins, new modules, new components, or new language packages.
    * Insertion of custom source code (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or PHP) in preinstalled templates or other places in Click-n-Build applications.

Thank you for your understanding.

SMF is one of the programs in that section.  Any ideas?  I am at a loss.....

I am not that familiar with how the 1and1 click to install works, I do know that Fantastico for example somestimes does not set the correct permissions sometimes.

Start with a manual install and see if that works, if all else fails open a support ticket as it appears your having issues chmodding files/folders.

Illori

have you tried adding a temp folder to your packages folder? i am assuming this folder is not there. you can always put in a support ticket with your host and ask them to check your file permissions and ownership if you are unsure how to do it yourself.

Ok, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I just spoke with 1and1 support for the umpteenth time and was able to squeeze out of them that I needed to separately install a new download of SMF in a new directory.  And loose everything in my old forum....   Another words, the "destination" can not be changed.

1and1...

That's rubbish and they know it. :)

Anyway, you can't upgrade to v1.1.13 from 1.1.11 using Package manager.

You need to get this

http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_1-1-13_upgrade.zip

and follow the ReadMe, in the archive.

Illori

well yes you can if you upgrade to 1.1.12 first then you can upgrade to 1.1.13 using the package manager

Illori

because your way you may have to reinstall your mods... and most people dont want to do that.
