Is it possible to install smf on a server without ftp access?

Greeting smf people,

I need help please for something that no doubt has been asked many times.

Is the smf forum I've been asked to install impossible?

I've made a mysql database for the forum and the site is chrooted with sftp and ssh access only.

I will not open a ftp port for obvious reasons.

I don't see how I can install this, but would love someone to point me in the right direction.

When trying to install... At the beginning of the install process I get:

Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.

by default smf does not support sftp for connecting to fix things like chmod. i am not sure if you can do the install without the ftp info working. if you are good with code you could try looking for all calls for ftp and see if you can edit them for sftp and the correct port.

If I allow ftp to install the board will it break anything later regarding updates etc when ftp access is off?

No, you will not break anything unless you will touch the files. Do you have File Manager access? You can upload a copy of Smf at your server with it if you do not want to use ftp.

I'll chmod the files and see if it skips that ftp screen..

Yeah I think hopefully I'm going to have egg on my face regarding this.

I'll be back in a few hours hopefully to mark this as solved and beg an admin to delete the thread..

That was strange I had to chmod all of the files to 777 before the ftp install screen went away..
rhel6 box.

I expect I'll be around from time to time since I'll have to maintain it.
