We posted this the other day but did not have the error messages.  Now we do....

using the 'large upgrade' to 5.0
This is the error the upgrader gets:

his query:

   SELECT ID_HOLIDAY
   FROM smf_calendar_holidays
   WHERE YEAR(eventDate) > 2010
   LIMIT 1;

Caused the error:

Unknown column 'eventDate' in 'where clause

We read a thread kindly provided by RedOne on various upgrade problems including the above, and the answers and direction seems variable, i.e. taking one in several directions.  No clear solution is readily apparent.......... at least at the semi novice level ! We have no mods!!!!!!

In doing a Google search for this error, it seems that there are several hundred smf users  (perhaps thousands) who have been stumped by thus error going back as far as 2004.  This is just what we feared when we started this thread - that many have stumbled over the same identical upgrade problem - even those with version 1.xx.

This seems way too complex for a semi novice, therefore would the simplest and most direct solution be to just do a Full Install of 2.0 RC5 and import the database from 2.0 RC2?

We have no mods except logo gif, and the obvious settings in our 18 month old forum. Would we lose those settings and the board and topic names etc, in the event of a fresh install of 2.0 rc5 and an import of the prior 2.0 rc2 database?

We're looking for the easiest way out for dummies!!!!!

Our thanks for anyone who can lend some advice.

If that was my forum, this is what I'd do.

Firstly, if I could get to it, I'd go to the SMF admin panel and "Repair errors".

Then, I'd go to my CPanel and try to repair the database.

If neither of those helps, I'd scratch my head and go down the pub for a very large Jack Daniel's. ;)

the above will not work as the upgrade.php script has to be run in order to get all database changes applied. the old database will not work with the newer code.

I read that Illori has posted that a full install of rc5 and linking the rc2 data base apparently won't work. I strongly suspect he is right.

Though I ran into the following two posts which seem to suggest that it might work if afterward you run upgrade.php

I am confused.

Any insight would be a great help!

Do a fresh install, then use the info from your previous Settings.php to connect your database to your fresh install.  Maybe there are other ways of doing it, but that's what I did and it worked. Although if you had a different theme installed, it might look odd until you go in your admin panel and change your theme to the default theme. Hope that helps.

also be sure to run upgrade.php or you will run into further issues as the database will not match the files you are using

Illori

once you run upgrade.php the database is updated to the latest. if you do not run upgrade.php you are likely to get some errors due to not having run it. setting it up to link to your old database is fine as long as upgrade.php gets run before you start using the forum. and by the way i am not a he ;)
