New member joining every 2-3 minutes

All day I have seen about 4-5 new people signing up to the forum on my site. There is no way this is normal traffic for my site - I would expect something like 2-3 legitimate signups a day. I was using RC3, and thought I might be affected by a security issue, so I updated to RC5, but that made no difference.

I'm assuming that they must have a script that is adding themselves and that at some stage they probably intend to do something not nice.

Is there something I should be doing about security to stop them? Is there some way I can identify these people who came through and joined in this way?

try admin -> security and moderation -> anti-spam -> verification questions, enter a few questions and the bots will have a lot harder time registering on your forum. you can also check out the anti-spam mods on the mod site.
