It's actually good news. :D
We were working on making the builds ready, and if you stop in the middle of version changes for 2.0... that's what happens. :D

I didn't intend to worry you, sorry about that. ;)
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

Good, then I'm not waisting my time checking the download page countless times a day, right!? lol  ;)
You're not the only one. :) I'm hooked to checking the bug tracker. I saw a new confirmed bug this morning, but it seems that "2.0 SVN can not find version of files" is not going to cause extended delay to the 2.0 final release. I hope it's really true. But you never know...

Farjo

"and if you stop in the middle of version changes for 2.0... that's what happens."

So that report will get removed as "not a bug"?

"I didn't intend to worry you, sorry about that." as Cheryl Cole would say "Nee bother lad!"

Illori

no this is a bug, but very easy for the developers to fix. norv was in the middle of changes and not all got complete at that time, so this was left as a result.

Antechinus

Well, it sort of is and sort of isn't. If nobody had bothered to download the nightly and try it out, then this would most likely have been fixed before anyone noticed. Norv was halfway through doing the files but had to take a break (sleep, food work, etc). So it's more of a process being half finished on one day and fully finished the next day, rather than something unexpected causing a fault in the software. Norv wants to leave it on Mantis until all the files are changed, just as a reminder.

Just a quick question: say my forum runs on RC5, could I use the update package to move onto SMF 2.0 when it's released or would I have to use the upgrade package ?

PortaMx is probably the best SMF portal!

Illori

do you have any mods installed? if so you need the use the large upgrade package.

sharks

Well, i'm not sure what tonic you guys (SMF devs) have switched to, but the bug tracker suddenly cleared up to show only 1 bug left! :D
I guess this means that there won't be a 2.0.1 release so soon after 2.0 gold.

It would appear we are now only one bug away from the 2.0 final release... "Some files missing 'admin_register_activate' => array"
http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/view.php?id=4725

P.S. I noticed that the other missing bugs have simply been shifted to the 2.1 branch. Is that a good/safe thing to do? Just wondering...

Antechinus

No it's not good or safe, but we get a kick out of living dangerously. :P

They're trivial things that aren't release critical, so rather than hold things up we put them off until 2.1.

Mr. Jinx

I think SMF 2.0 will be the most stable and (almost) bug free forum software ever released in this market. It must be, after all those months (or years) of bug solving without adding huge new changes/features.
And don't get me wrong, that's just great 8)

so can we expect release by tomorrow

At this point, it is safe to deduce before the end of this week... unless SMF undergoes another asteroid attack! :D

having seen how this goes over the last few years, I thought that if we didn't give a deadline this thing would never happen.
I see this a lot, and it's one of the reasons that deadlines are useful even for free, volunteer projects. :)

QuoteIOW, I'm as pissed with it as some other people are. I actually wanted the dev crew, including myself, to feel the pressure. I was totally sick of hearing "It'll be ready when it's ready" and "Soon" and (FFS) "No, really really soon. Really." It made me embarrassed to be associated with the project and I was ready to strangle kittens if I heard it again.
Your frankness and honesty is reassuring. And I don't mean that sarcastically.

QuoteThe OpenID bug has been sorted and that was the last blocker. We also managed to sneak in a couple of other bug fixes, so that's all good too. The ones left on Mantis are trivial and aren't worth delaying the release.
Good to hear. So at this point, what's the holdup or what is happening? Another way to word that would be "why isn't it available for download already?" but the tone of that comes of nasty. :P

Cheers...

Come on guys, let's make some bets!

I can assure you, there will always be bugs. Let's look at SimpleDesk, there were bugs reported, it was fixed but something else breaks it, fixed again, it breaks something else again. No software are ever bug free. You will SMF 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.0.3 and so on.
"There is no god, and that's the simple truth. If every trace of any single religion were wiped out and nothing were passed on, it would never be created exactly that way again. There might be some other nonsense in its place, but not that exact nonsense. If all of science were wiped out, it would still be true and someone would find a way to figure it all out again."
