well i just finished changing my domain...ive spent all night changing my old domain to a new one...and once i got it working..i did what i explained...and this error occurred.

Baby Daisy

does your site load?

check your files and paths, use repair_settings.php to ensure everything is right, make sure files aren't empty and they actually contain what they should, etc

What is repair_settings.php?

bluehaze1991

yeah i did that not too long ago to switch to the new site..but i did it again since this predicament and now....it just shows a blank page when i put the repair_settings.php

Baby Daisy

dont know what to suggest, its a path or file problem, db edits dont cause those errors

perhaps I can take a look?

i noticed htat when i upload the file repairsetting to my ftp.....it has 0kb...is it empty?

Illori

do you have a settings_bak.php file on your server? if so please copy it to settings.php. looks like your server somehow blanked out your settings.

bluehaze1991

yeah i notice that every time i try to change the title of my site in server setting on smf...it blanks out my settings and gives me that error....so then i have to re upload my settings file...

how can i fix this because i need to change the title of my site but i cant without getting an error, when i dont try to change the name everything works fine..

Illori

sounds like an issue with your hosting not really an smf issue.

Core Configuration
Failed to make backup of Settings.php - make sure Settings_bak.php exists and is writable.

i dont have a setting_bak.php file so that must be the problem?

MrPhil

It's not your host, it's a nasty bug in SMF that the developers refuse to fix. When there's a database error, under certain circumstances this can empty out your Settings.php file. The solution is simple (assuming your Settings_bak.php file hasn't also been trashed). Copy your Settings_bak.php file over your empty Settings.php file, and you're back in business. Then make Settings.php "read only" (chmod to 444) so that bug doesn't bite you again.

Read my sig > Fixes for more information on this bug.
